Section 3Hazard suitability, extinguisher type, rating, distribution, and area coverage
- Confirm the extinguisher type and rating are suitable for the fire hazards present in the protected area according to the site's approved fire-protection requirements.
- Check that changes in occupancy, storage, processes, equipment, kitchens, electrical loads, flammable liquids, combustible metals, or other hazards have not made the existing extinguisher selection unsuitable.
- Verify extinguisher distribution and travel distance remain compliant with the applicable OSHA, fire-code, insurer, or authority requirements for the hazard classification.
- Confirm Class C extinguisher coverage is based on the underlying Class A or Class B hazard as applicable and that energized electrical hazards are considered in extinguisher selection.
- Where combustible-metal or cooking-oil hazards exist, confirm the required specialist extinguisher type is present, identified, and located for the approved hazard.
- Escalate any area with missing coverage, unsuitable extinguisher type, changed hazard, or excessive travel distance for qualified fire-protection review.
Section 5Pressure or charge, gauge, weight indicators, pin, tamper seal, handle, and readiness
- Where a pressure gauge is provided, confirm the indicator is within the manufacturer's normal operating range and not showing undercharge or overcharge.
- For extinguishers without a conventional gauge, verify the approved charge or readiness indicator and service method show the unit is ready for use.
- Confirm the safety pin, locking device, pull pin, or equivalent operating restraint is present and correctly seated.
- Check the tamper seal or anti-tamper device is intact and there is no unexplained evidence that the extinguisher has been operated or partially discharged.
- Inspect carrying handle, operating lever, valve assembly, neck area, and visible operating components for bending, cracking, looseness, or damage.
- Remove from normal service and arrange qualified maintenance for units showing abnormal pressure, missing pin or seal, suspected discharge, valve damage, or other readiness failure.
Section 7Monthly visual inspection, annual maintenance, service records, and replacement during maintenance
- Verify each applicable extinguisher has received the required monthly visual inspection and missed inspections are identified and corrected.
- Confirm the monthly inspection covers location, accessibility, visibility, charge or pressure, pin and seal, operating instructions, and obvious physical condition.
- Verify the required annual maintenance check is current and completed by an appropriately qualified service provider or competent person under the applicable requirements.
- Confirm annual maintenance records identify the extinguisher or equipment inspected, inspection date, person performing maintenance, and required certification information.
- When an extinguisher has been removed for maintenance, recharge, repair, or testing, confirm approved alternate equivalent protection is provided where required.
- Escalate overdue monthly inspections, overdue annual maintenance, missing service records, or unprotected locations created by extinguisher removal.
Section 9Employee-use policy, extinguisher education, designated-user training, post-use controls, and emergency readiness
- Confirm the site's emergency policy clearly states whether employees may use portable extinguishers, only designated personnel may use them, or employees must evacuate without attempting firefighting.
- Where extinguishers are provided for general employee use, verify required employee education on extinguisher principles and incipient-stage firefighting hazards is current.
- Where designated employees are assigned to use firefighting equipment, verify their equipment-specific training is current and aligned with the emergency action plan.
- Confirm occupants or designated users know that life safety and evacuation take priority and that extinguisher use is limited to conditions permitted by the site's emergency procedure.
- Verify any extinguisher used, partially discharged, damaged, or with a broken seal after an emergency or drill is promptly reported, removed from normal service, recharged or replaced, and documented.
- Check replacement extinguishers, temporary units, or returned serviced units are correctly located, suitable for the hazard, accessible, and added back to the inventory.
Section 2Location, visibility, accessibility, mounting, cabinets, signs, and obstruction control
- Confirm each extinguisher is in its designated location and has not been moved, borrowed, removed, or replaced by an unsuitable unit.
- Verify each extinguisher is readily visible or its location is clearly identified by approved signage where direct visibility is limited.
- Confirm access is not blocked by furniture, stock, equipment, vehicles, waste, doors, decorations, temporary work, or other obstructions.
- Inspect wall brackets, hangers, stands, recessed cabinets, surface cabinets, straps, and retention devices for secure condition and correct support.
- Check extinguisher cabinets for broken glazing, damaged doors, jammed latches, corrosion, unauthorized locking, or other conditions that delay access.
- Escalate missing, inaccessible, concealed, unsecured, or improperly mounted extinguishers immediately and provide the approved temporary protection where required.
Section 4Operating instructions, labels, identification, inspection tag, asset data, and legibility
- Confirm the manufacturer's operating instructions and nameplate are legible, intact, and positioned so they can be read without removing the extinguisher from service.
- Verify extinguisher classification, rating, agent type, and relevant hazard or limitation markings remain legible.
- Check asset number, barcode, QR code, inspection tag, service label, or digital identifier is present and matches the extinguisher register where used.
- Confirm monthly inspection status or equivalent inspection evidence is current and attributable to the correct extinguisher.
- Check annual maintenance labels, collars, tags, or digital service records are legible and linked to the correct unit.
- Record missing, damaged, unreadable, incorrect, or mismatched labels and tags for service correction before the inspection is closed.
Section 6Cylinder, shell, hose, nozzle, horn, corrosion, leakage, physical damage, and cleanliness
- Inspect the cylinder or shell for dents, deep scratches, bulging, cracking, severe abrasion, impact damage, or other mechanical injury.
- Check for corrosion, rust, pitting, chemical attack, paint loss, moisture damage, or deterioration around the base, neck, seams, handle, and mounting points.
- Inspect hose, nozzle, horn, diffuser, wand, couplings, and discharge openings for cracking, blockage, contamination, missing parts, or damage.
- Check for agent leakage, residue around the valve or hose, pressure loss, staining, or other signs that the extinguisher may have discharged or developed a leak.
- Confirm the extinguisher is sufficiently clean for labels, gauge, condition, and operating components to be inspected without obscuration.
- Remove from service and escalate extinguishers with serious corrosion, mechanical injury, leakage, damaged discharge components, or other conditions requiring qualified maintenance or hydrostatic evaluation.
Section 8Hydrostatic testing, internal maintenance where applicable, cylinder eligibility, and test records
- Verify the extinguisher's hydrostatic-test due date is known and remains within the interval required for that extinguisher type under the applicable standard.
- Confirm units showing new corrosion, mechanical injury, or other conditions requiring hydrostatic testing are removed from service for qualified evaluation.
- Check that hydrostatic testing is performed only by trained persons using suitable test equipment and facilities as required by the governing standard.
- Verify required hydrostatic-test records or durable evidence identify the extinguisher, test date, test pressure where applicable, and person or organization performing the test.
- Confirm internal maintenance or examination required for the extinguisher type is current under the applicable manufacturer's and regulatory requirements.
- Remove from service any extinguisher that fails hydrostatic testing, is not fit for testing, or is otherwise prohibited or unsafe under the applicable requirements.
Section 10Inspection findings, critical actions, service escalation, verification, trends, and final sign-off
- Classify findings by missing unit, access or mounting, hazard suitability, label or tag, pressure or charge, seal or pin, physical damage, maintenance, hydrostatic test, training, or other approved category.
- Prioritize findings using loss of fire protection, hazard severity, occupant exposure, extinguisher condition, location criticality, recurrence, and urgency.
