  • Check transfer gaps, chutes, guides, side rails, stops, diverters, pushers, gates, or sorters for secure condition and safe alignment.
  • Verify products, totes, cartons, pallets, or packages are suitable for the conveyor and do not routinely jam, tip, or create unstable flow.
  • Check accumulation zones, merge points, bends, declines, lifts, and interfaces with other equipment for congestion or pinch hazards.
  • Inspect areas where workers manually load, unload, clear, straighten, or inspect products for safe hand placement and adequate separation from moving parts.
  • Escalate recurring jams, unstable product flow, falling-product risk, damaged transfer components, or manual intervention that exposes workers to hazardous movement.
Section 7Electrical controls, sensors, alarms, and restart protection
  • Inspect control panels, pushbuttons, selector switches, indicator lights, disconnects, junction boxes, wiring, and enclosures for visible damage.
  • Check sensors, photo eyes, limit switches, proximity devices, encoders, jam detectors, or other control devices are secure and functioning where applicable.
  • Verify start-up alarms, warning lights, beacons, horns, or other pre-start signals operate where required by the system.
  • Check the conveyor does not restart unexpectedly after an emergency stop, power loss, guard opening, or jam-clearing event without the approved reset sequence.
  • Inspect cables, conduits, plugs, connectors, and electrical enclosures for exposed conductors, loose fittings, moisture, or impact damage.
  • Escalate electrical damage, failed sensors, missing start warnings, uncontrolled restart, or control faults that could expose workers to unexpected movement.
Section 9Housekeeping, spills, environment, and fire access
  • Inspect beneath, beside, and around conveyors for product buildup, dust, debris, wrap, strapping, broken packaging, oil, grease, or other housekeeping issues.
  • Check spilled product, liquids, lubricants, or loose material does not create slip, fire, contamination, or moving-part hazards.
  • Verify ventilation, dust control, temperature, humidity, washdown, or environmental conditions are suitable for the conveyor and materials handled.
  • Check fire extinguishers, hose equipment, sprinkler access, electrical panels, emergency exits, and egress routes near conveyors remain unobstructed.
  • Inspect waste bins, reject chutes, scrap areas, and accumulation points for overflow or obstruction affecting safe access.
  • Escalate combustible buildup, blocked fire access, uncontrolled spills, severe contamination, or housekeeping conditions that could increase conveyor risk.
Section 2Guards, covers, barriers, and nip-point protection
  • Inspect guards around pulleys, sprockets, chains, belts, gears, couplings, shafts, drives, and other accessible moving parts for secure condition.
  • Check nip points, pinch points, shear points, in-running points, and other entanglement hazards are guarded or otherwise controlled.
  • Inspect fixed covers, interlocked guards, side panels, mesh guards, barriers, skirts, and access doors for damage, missing fasteners, or gaps.
  • Verify guards are not bypassed, wedged open, modified, removed, or defeated during normal operation.
  • Check guard openings and clearance prevent unintended contact with hazardous moving components while allowing safe operation.
  • Stop and isolate the conveyor when missing, damaged, loose, or defeated guarding exposes workers to moving-part hazards.
Section 4Belts, rollers, chains, drives, and tracking
  • Inspect conveyor belts for cuts, fraying, tears, damaged splices, exposed reinforcement, severe wear, or contamination affecting safe operation.
  • Check belt tracking, tension, alignment, edge condition, and movement for rubbing, wandering, slipping, or contact with fixed structures.
  • Inspect rollers, idlers, bearings, shafts, sprockets, chains, slats, flights, or other moving components for wear, damage, looseness, or abnormal noise.
  • Check drive motors, gearboxes, couplings, guards, mounts, and visible transmission components for leaks, overheating, vibration, or damage.
  • Inspect supports, frames, legs, braces, rails, hangers, and fasteners for movement, corrosion, impact damage, or structural deterioration.
  • Escalate severe belt damage, failed rollers, loose chains, damaged drives, structural weakness, or abnormal movement that could cause equipment failure.
Section 6Access, crossings, walkways, and work areas
  • Verify workers use approved crossings, stairs, platforms, catwalks, gates, or designated routes rather than stepping over or under conveyors.
  • Inspect walkways, platforms, stairs, handrails, toe boards, gates, ladders, and access points around conveyors for safe condition.
  • Check maintenance and cleaning access provides enough space to work without uncontrolled exposure to adjacent moving equipment.
  • Verify floor space around conveyors is free from trip hazards, loose packaging, pallets, hoses, cables, tools, and stored materials.
  • Inspect overhead conveyors or elevated transfer points for falling-object controls where required.
  • Restrict access when damaged platforms, missing rails, blocked crossings, poor clearance, or unsafe work areas create a fall or struck-by hazard.
Section 8Cleaning, jam clearing, and energy isolation
  • Verify cleaning, jam clearing, inspection, adjustment, maintenance, and repair tasks use the approved energy-isolation process when hazardous movement could occur.
  • Check lockout or isolation points are accessible, clearly identified, and match the current conveyor system and task.
  • Verify stored energy such as gravity, tension, pneumatic pressure, hydraulic pressure, raised components, or suspended loads is controlled where applicable.
  • Check tools, hooks, push sticks, cleaning devices, or other approved aids are used instead of hands when minor intervention is permitted without full isolation.
  • Review recent jam-clearing or cleaning events for evidence of bypassed guards, unsafe reaching, live work, or incomplete isolation.
  • Stop work when isolation cannot be confirmed or when cleaning or jam-clearing methods expose workers to moving or stored-energy hazards.
Section 10Defects, corrective actions, and safe restart
  • Classify findings by guarding, emergency stop, belt or roller, drive, transfer point, access, electrical control, isolation, housekeeping, or other approved category.
  • Prioritize findings using entanglement risk, crush or pinch exposure, unexpected restart, falling-product risk, electrical hazard, recurrence, and operational impact.
  • Apply immediate controls such as stopping and isolating the conveyor, barricading access, removing product, cleaning spills, or restricting use.
  • Create corrective actions with named owners, due dates, repair scope, parts or service needs, temporary controls, evidence expectations, and reinspection criteria.
